💫 Why York is Perfect for Solo Travellers

Wondering if York should be your next solo getaway? Let me spill the tea: this historic city feels like stepping into a real-life fairytale - cobbled streets, cozy cafes, ancient walls, and all. 🏰✨

I explored York solo, and honestly? It’s one of the safest, most charming places you can wander on your own. Whether you’re chasing medieval magic, hidden foodie gems, or just craving a peaceful stroll through time, York totally delivers.
Here’s everything I loved (plus a few must-know tips to make your solo adventure even smoother!)

Arrival & First Impressions

For my solo adventure to York, I stayed at The Principal Hotel - and honestly? Highly recommend. It’s right next to the train station, so after arriving with my suitcase and excitement levels through the roof, it was a super easy walk to check-in. The hotel itself felt stylish and welcoming, setting the perfect tone for my trip.

First impressions of York? Think cobbled streets, storybook buildings, and a cozy, friendly vibe that immediately made me feel at ease. 🌸

Day One: Scares, Ghosts & A Little Magic 👻🧙‍♀️

I kicked things off with a trip to the York Dungeons. Was it scary? YES. But in a fun, theatrical, "I'm learning history while also slightly jumping out of my skin" kind of way. Highly recommend if you love a little adrenaline with your education!

After that, I wandered through The Shambles - York’s iconic medieval street. It’s touristy but honestly? Totally magical. Twisting alleys, leaning timber buildings... it felt like walking through a fairytale.

While there, I popped into The York Ghost Merchants (a must!). I couldn't resist buying a few adorable little ghosties to bring home - each one handmade and full of charm. 👻✨

Next up: The Potions Cauldron. If you're a Harry Potter fan (or just love a bit of whimsy), you’ll adore this spot. I tried some Harry Potter-themed shots and even left with a tiny gargoyle souvenir who now guards my bookshelf. 🧙‍♀️

Day Two: History, Trains & Tasty Finds

The next day was all about soaking in York’s rich history.

First stop: the Jorvik Viking Centre. You hop into a little ride (think slow-moving taxi vibes) and travel through a recreation of old York. It’s super informative and a fun way to dive into the city’s Viking past.

Then it was on to the National Railway Museum - a must for train enthusiasts (or honestly, anyone who loves a good "wow" moment). I got to see the Flying Scotsman up close, and it was genuinely impressive. 🚂

I also spent some time wandering around the outside of the stunning York Minster. Even without going inside, the architecture is jaw-dropping and it’s impossible not to feel a little awe-struck.

Solo Foodie Adventures 🍜🍽️

For food, York absolutely delivered.

I hit up Spark York CIC - a super cool spot made up of shipping containers with loads of independent food vendors. Perfect for solo travellers: casual, vibrant, and packed with delicious options.

I also treated myself to lunch at The Star Inn the City. Gorgeous river views and incredible food. (Honestly, I would go back to York just for another meal here.) 🍝😋

Solo Travel Safety Feels 🧵

Walking around York solo felt completely safe. Even at night, wandering back from dinner, I felt relaxed and comfortable. The city is well-lit, compact, and filled with friendly locals - perfect for anyone easing into solo adventures.
